Curly hair - whether wavy, curly, or coily - requires specialized care to be its healthiest and happiest. Unlike straight or fine hair, textured hair has unique needs that require products formulated to nourish, hydrate, and manage its natural volume and curl patterns. Since our founder has curly hair herself, we really get curls.

At Bright Body, we only formulate using nontoxic ingredients - a combination of organic, plant-derived ingredients and performance-enhancing safe synthetics.

Understanding Hair Textures: 1A to 4C

To fully appreciate the range of curly hair textures, it's important to understand how hair textures are classified. The system uses a numerical scale from 1A to 4C, with each category representing a specific type of curl pattern and texture.

  • 1A, 1B, 1C – Straight hair: Generally speaking, straight hair doesn't tend to need as much moisture as textured hair. However, some straight hair might benefit from products like lightweight leave-ins and moisture spritzes.

  • 2A, 2B, 2C – Wavy hair: Wavy hair falls somewhere between straight and curly. It has gentle waves with a little more volume, but it still needs hydration and curl definition products. Wavy hair can often look limp if not properly styled, so light styling gels and creams that offer flexible hold are key.

  • 3A, 3B, 3C – Curly hair: Curly hair has well-defined ringlets or corkscrews, and it tends to be thicker and more voluminous than wavy hair. It can also be more prone to frizz and dryness, so it requires heavier moisturization, but still needs light hold to define the curls without weighing them down.

  • 4A, 4B, 4C – Coily hair: Coily hair is tightly curled or kinked, often with a zigzag pattern or small, dense curls. It can be more prone to dryness and breakage, so it requires extra moisture and hydration. Coily hair thrives with creams and gels that provide stronger hold and moisture without causing frizz or flaking.

While this numerical system is helpful for understanding hair textures, it's not a perfect framework; coarseness and porosity also contribute to your hair needs but are not considered in this system.

What Makes Curly Hair Different?

Curly hair is naturally more prone to dryness and frizz than straight hair due to the structure of each hair strand. The twists and turns of curls prevent the natural oils from traveling smoothly down the length of the hair, leaving the ends drier and more susceptible to breakage. In addition to moisture, curly hair also needs gentle, nourishing care that supports its texture without disrupting the curl pattern.

Wavy, curly, and coily hair textures all have different needs when it comes to hydration, protein, and hold. Wavy hair tends to be less coarse and may need lighter styling products to keep the waves defined, while coily hair needs heavier moisturization, deep conditioning, and stronger hold products to maintain curl definition and avoid frizz.

The Key to Curly Hair Care: Nourish, Hydrate, and Define

At Bright Body, we offer a full range of nontoxic products that address the unique needs of curly hair. Our products are "curly method approved," meaning they don't use silicones or sulfates. Even better? We also formulate without parabens, formaldehyde-releasers, isothiazolinones, phenoxyethanol, synthetic fragrances, and petroleum byproducts.

Let's walk through the perfect wash day and refresh day routine using our best curly hair products.

Wash Day Routine for Wavy, Curly, or Coily Hair

Start your wash day with a moisturizing, gentle cleanse and follow up with targeted conditioning. Here's how:

1. Moisturizing Shampoo:

The first step in any curly hair wash routine is to cleanse the scalp and hair of dirt, oil, and product buildup. Our Moisturizing Shampoo is designed for textured hair and features a blend of nourishing ingredients that hydrate and protect the hair while leaving it soft and manageable. It’s formulated to cleanse without stripping the natural oils curly hair needs to stay healthy. The base is made with organic oat milk and aloe vera juice, both of which we make from scratch in-house.

How to Use: Apply a generous amount to damp hair, massage gently into your scalp, and work through to the ends. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

2. Repairing Conditioner or Post-Wash Herbal Lemon Rinse:

Once your hair is clean, it’s time to lock in moisture and start the conditioning process. Depending on your hair’s texture and needs, you can follow up with either the Repairing Conditioner or the Post-Wash Herbal Lemon Rinse.

  • Repairing Conditioner is perfect for coarser, drier hair types that need extra moisture and nourishment. It’s rich in emollients and will help seal the hair cuticle, locking in hydration while softening the strands. You can leave it in for added deep conditioning or rinse it out depending on your preference.

  • Post-Wash Herbal Lemon Rinse is ideal for hair that can become easily weighed down, tends to get oily, or has signs of dullness and damage. This lightweight rinse removes any buildup and adds shine without leaving your curls feeling heavy. If your curls are on the finer or looser side, this rinse can revitalize dull hair and give it a shine-boost. Infused with three organic hair-friendly herbs, the Rinse does wonders for healing scalp irritation and damaged hair.

How to Use:

  • For Repairing Conditioner, apply it from mid-length to ends, working it through each curl. Leave it in for a few minutes, then rinse. It can also be left in for extra-dry hair.
  • For Post-Wash Herbal Lemon Rinse, use it after rinsing out your shampoo. Apply from root to tip on wet hair. Gently massage it into scalp, and use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to evenly distribute down the length of hair. Allow to sit 1-5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

3. Styling: Flaxseed & Oat Protein Curly Hair Gel or Bamboo FlexiStrong Styling Jelly

Now it’s time to define and set those curls. Choose between our Flaxseed & Oat Protein Curly Hair Gel or the Bamboo FlexiStrong Styling Jelly based on your hair’s porosity and desired hold.

  • Flaxseed & Oat Protein Curly Hair Gel is a lighter option, great for higher porosity hair that tends to absorb moisture quickly. The gel provides a light to medium hold with a healthy dose of protein to help support curl structure without flaking or crunchiness. It’s perfect for soft curls that need a little more definition. This formula is loaded with organic ingredients, including flaxseeds, house made oat milk, shea butter, and jojoba oil.

  • Bamboo FlexiStrong Styling Jelly is ideal for lower porosity hair that may need more hold. This gel offers a firmer hold and longer-lasting curl definition. It’s designed to maintain moisture while controlling frizz and adding shine to coily or curly hair. A key ingredient in this jelly is the nontoxic polyquaternium-69, one of the gentlest of the polyquats that offers excellent hold and easy wash-out.

How to Use: While your hair soaking wet, scrunch the gel or styling jelly to sections of your hair. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to evenly distribute the product from root to tip. Scrunch your curls to help enhance their natural shape and define them. Use a cotton T-shirt to scrunch out excess water and further distribute the product. Allow your curls to air dry or diffuse for a quicker drying time.

Refresh Day Routine for Wavy, Curly, or Curly Hair

On non-wash days, your curls still need some love to maintain definition and minimize frizz. Here’s how to refresh your curls with Bright Body products:

1. Moisture Locking Curl Refresher:

When your curls start to look dry or frizzy - especially after the overnight smoosh - it’s time for a refresh. Our Moisture Locking Curl Refresher is the perfect lightweight mist to hydrate, revive, and redefine curls. It’s infused with natural oils and humectants to lock in moisture and eliminate frizz without making your hair greasy or heavy. Organic non-GMO vegetable glycerin and jojoba oil work together to give your curls the hydration and definition they need to look and feel their best.

How to Use: Start with 1/2 a pump of the Moisture Locking Curl Refresher into your palms, rub hands together, then "palm" over your dry hair, focusing on the areas that need the most moisture and curl re-definition. Tighter curl textures can twist sections of their hair that need refreshing.

2. Detangling Mist OR Plain Water Mist:

To reactivate your curls after the Moisture Locking Curl Refresher, lightly mist your hair with plain water OR the Detangling Mist (for hair that’s tangled or in need of a little more hydration). It will help your curls pop back into shape without frizz. Using the Detangling Mist over plain water will also help with additional hydration and improved combability if you're prone to tangles and knots. The base of organic rose hydrosol, rosemary hydrosol, aloe, and non-GMO vegetable glycerin offer amped-up hydration benefits above and beyond plain water.

How to Use: Lightly mist your curls with the Detangling Mist OR plain water after applying the Moisture Locking Curl Refresher. As needed, use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to detangle and redefine curls. Allow hair to air dry or diffuse.
