At Bright Body, we believe that skincare is a holistic practice that connects the skin, body, and mind. While we formulate with a strong influence from Ayurveda - India's system of traditional medicine - our approach to skincare isn't strictly Ayurvedic.
We blend ancient wisdom with modern science to create formulations that nourish, balance, and protect the skin without compromising on safety or efficacy. This blog post will explore Ayurvedic skin care essentials, how skin health is connected to gut health, and how to incorporate Ayurvedic ingredients into your skincare routine using our products.
Ayurveda takes a holistic approach to health that integrates the body, mind, and spirit. Ayurvedic skin care focuses on balancing the doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — each representing different physical and emotional characteristics. According to Ayurveda, the skin is a reflection of your overall well-being and is closely linked to the balance of these doshas (especially with respect to your digestive, circulatory, and lymphatic systems).
In Ayurveda, the concept of Prakruti (the inherent nature) and Vikruti (the current state of imbalance) play crucial roles in skin care. The aim is to restore balance and harmony, as healthy skin is a sign of a balanced body.
Ayurvedic skin care emphasizes natural, plant-based ingredients that have been used for centuries to nourish and heal the skin. These ingredients include herbs, oils, and hydrosols that work synergistically to treat skin conditions and enhance overall skin health.
In Ayurveda, the gut (or agni, meaning digestive fire) plays a central role in overall health, and this extends to the skin. A well-functioning digestive system is thought to be directly related to clear, healthy, vibrant skin. When the digestive system is weak or imbalanced, it can lead to the buildup of toxins (known as ama) in the body, which may manifest as skin issues like acne, dryness, excess oiliness, and inflammation.
A healthy gut helps break down food, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste efficiently. This process supports the kidney and liver in their roles as detoxifiers. When the gut is healthy, it positively affects the skin. On the other hand, poor digestion can lead to the accumulation of toxins, which can lead to skin issues such as acne, dullness, and eczema.
While high-quality skin care products are important for healthy skin, from an Ayurvedic perspective, your lifestyle and nutrition matter, too.
While Ayurvedic principles are core to our formulations, we don't follow them rigidly. One key aspects of Ayurvedic skin care is the idea that if you wouldn't eat it, you shouldn't put it on your skin. While we believe in using the safest, most nourishing ingredients in our formulas, we don’t subscribe to the black-and-white notion that everything applied to the skin should be 100% edible. The absorption process of the skin is not the same as the metabolic process of digestion. The skin acts as a barrier, and though it absorbs substances, it does not do so in the same way as the digestive system.
For this reason, we use only safe synthetic ingredients when necessary, especially in water-based formulations that require preservatives for safety. While we prioritize natural ingredients, we recognize that the safest and most effective formulations come from a combination of both nature and science. Our approach ensures your skin gets the best of both worlds—nourishment from plant-based ingredients and performance and safety-enhancing benefits of of safe, effective synthetic ingredients.
If our approach resonates with you, here’s a guide to building a balanced Ayurvedic skin care routine using Bright Body products.
The first step in any skincare routine is cleansing. Our Ayurvedic Facial Wash gently cleanses without stripping the skin’s natural moisture. It contains aloe, oats, and gotu kola, which are known for their soothing and healing properties. Aloe vera hydrates and calms inflammation, oats provide gentle exfoliation and nourishment, and gotu kola strengthens the skin’s barrier while promoting collagen production. This wash is perfect for all skin types, as it cleanses without irritating or drying out the skin.
After cleansing, a toner helps to balance the skin’s pH and prepare it for the next steps in your routine. Our Ayurvedic Universal Toning Mist features gotu kola, witch hazel hydrosol, and rose hydrosol, each playing a key role in rejuvenating and calming the skin. Gotu kola stimulates circulation and promotes healthy collagen production, witch hazel provides gentle astringent properties to tighten pores, and rose hydrosol hydrates and refreshes the skin while balancing its natural oils. This mist is perfect for restoring balance to the skin and preparing it to absorb the following products.
Our Hydrating Gel is a lightweight moisturizer that hydrates and rejuvenates the skin without feeling heavy. With ingredients like gotu kola and ginseng extracts, aloe, and rose hydrosol, it soothes and nourishes the skin while boosting its natural radiance, also supported by the power of hydration-locking hyaluronic acid. Gotu kola promotes skin regeneration, ginseng supports healthy circulation and skin vitality, aloe provides hydration and relief from irritation, and rose hydrosol refreshes and tones the skin. Hyaluronic acid holds 1000X its weight in water at skin's surface for lasting hydration, plumping, and rejuvenating benefits.
To seal in moisture and provide additional nourishment, apply our Ayurvedic Facial Oil last. This oil is customizable based on your dosha—Vata, Pitta, or Kapha—ensuring it meets your skin’s specific needs. For dry and sensitive skin, Vata dosha, a richer oil blend is used to replenish moisture. For oily or inflamed skin, Pitta dosha requires a more cooling, calming blend. Kapha skin, which tends to be more oily, benefits from a balancing oil blend that regulates excess oil production. Our Ayurvedic Facial Oil features high-quality plant oils and extracts tailored to each skin type’s needs.
While our Ayurvedic skin care routine addresses general skin concerns, you may need additional support for specific issues. That’s where our targeted treatment products come in.
If you want to brighten your complexion and reduce pigmentation, our Illuminating Tonic is an excellent addition to your routine. This tonic blends Ayurvedic ingredients like turmeric and helichrysum hydrosol with modern ingredients like mandelic acid and hyaluronic acid that exfoliate, brighten, repair, soothe, and plump. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to reduce pigmentation, while mandelic acid provides gentle exfoliation. Helichrysum hydrosol promotes healing and soothing for the skin while hyaluronic acid locks in hydration at skin's surface. This tonic works wonders for those looking to illuminate and even out their skin tone.
For those dealing with acne or blemishes, the Clear Skin Potion is a targeted treatment to keep your skin clear and healthy. This formula combines modern ingredients like azelaic acid and green tea extract with classic Ayurvedic rose hydrosol to address acne and inflammation. Azelaic acid gently combats inflammation and acne-causing bacteria while green tea extract provides antioxidant protection and reduces redness. Rose hydrosol hydrates and calms the skin, making this potion perfect for treating acne while maintaining balance.
