If you’ve been keeping up with us on Instagram, you know that we will be releasing an all new Facial Exfoliant for all skin types in the next month!
This is our first collaboration from top-to-bottom with Chelsea Martin, Master Aesthetician, Lead Instructor of Aesthetics at Lotus School of Integrated Professions, and owner/founder of Luna Aesthetics & Spa. When Chelsea and I first met last fall, we clicked immediately on both a personal and professional level. We closed down the coffeeshop that afternoon chatting for hours!
One thing that both Chelsea & I love on a super geeky level is cosmetic chemistry. We could go on for ages about the various applications and merits of any number of ingredients without getting bored – yes, really. So when Chelsea sent me a note about a month ago asking if I would be interested in collaborating on a facial exfoliant formula, I got so excited! In fact, just hours before I received her email, I had put a note on my to-do list to email HER about collaborating on a facial exfoliant. That’s #bossbabe business magic, people! ✨
Before Chelsea and I sat down to go over the ins and outs of this new formula, I put on my research hat and got down to business looking into herbs that I wanted in this gentle formula for all skin types (yes, there was a spreadsheet involved). 🤓 I started on the Mountain Rose Herbs website and noted all of the benefits of each herb that could be used topically. I narrowed down the field to my top five favorites before meeting up with Chelsea to talk nuts and bolts.
We quickly agreed on our base – coconut sugar 🥥. It’s finely ground, plant-derived, gentle, and of course it smells absolutely divine. Our other option under consideration was caster sugar, which is a step between granulated sugar and powdered sugar. Ultimately, we preferred the natural moisture content and aroma of the coconut sugar.
After about another hour of debating our options, we settled on the following ingredients to add to our coconut sugar base (all organic, of course):
- colloidal oatmeal AKA oatstraw powder – anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-itch, this powerhouse ingredient is super gentle and soothing for all skin types.
- calendula flower powder – anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-fungal, this powder made from dried marigold flowers is gentle, speeds healing, and reduces transepidermal water loss to leave skin calm and plump.
- gotu kola powder – antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, this rising star of K-beauty speeds healing and reduces transepidermal water loss to leave skin dewy and youthful.
- sea buckthorn fruit powder – antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, this popular ingredient for mature skin is rich in vitamin C and reduces transepidermal water loss leaving skin bright and hydrated.
Chelsea had one more request before we were ready to get some samples made – she wanted the product to be in glass packaging! Currently, all Bright Body products are packaged in BPA-free, PET plastic. I made that decision because our hair products couldn’t be in glass (glass in your shower isn’t a great idea) and I wanted all our products to have a consistent feel. However, I do hope to eventually transition our skincare products to glass. Starting with a glass-packaged exfoliant product is a great first step! Chelsea and I decided on a 2 oz. frosted glass bottle with a white aluminum closure.
After a little more time researching the proper concentrations of each ingredient, I whipped up the first batch and gave samples to the ladies of Luna, my summer intern Remy, and gave away two bottles to two lucky giveaway winners! And of course, I kept one for myself.
Our first feedback from our testers has been overwhelmingly positive! Since the coconut sugar is so fine, it dissolves quickly when mixed with water. The exfoliant does best when combined with oil, honey, or yogurt so we will be making sure that the labels reflect that.
We can’t wait to have this product ready for our fall & holiday markets!
Until next time,
